normal charge voltage for the D3 (has intelligent alternator!!!) is between 14.5 and and ca. 15.2 Volt. If charge voltage is around 13.6 to 14.0V then the alternator is on its way out. Also check that the negative battery terminal is really tight. It needs to be properly seated on the neg pole to make a good ground.

my land rover discovery has intermittent fault and can flatten a brand new battery in about 2 hours It has been checked out at lucas 3 or 4 times but no fault ever found help please . Is it the alternator and a faulty diode or is it in the alarm system

Jan 2, 2006. #4. put yer multi meter over the battery with the ign off ,check reading then start the engine . with ign off and a full battery you should have about 13.2 volts with engine running you need to have between 13.5 and 15 volts.. i wouldn't want to be messing around with meter leads that close to the fan

Then start the vehicle and check the voltage across the battery again should be between 13 and 14 volts. Id doesn't give you precise info on the alternator but tells you whether it is charging.
